Akragas Sicily : Herakles Counterstamp : Circa 405-392BC

Countermark bust of Herakles struck on earlier issues of Akragas following the destruction of the city by the Carthaginians.

Sicily, Akragas. Circa 450-415/06 BC Ae Hemilitron

(includes underlying coin) Ox: Crab; crayfish below, six pellets (mark of value) around; c/m; head of Herakles right within circular incuse

Rx: Eagle right, clutching dead hare in talons

You can just make out the Akragas coin base on the obverse of the worn coin. The reverse has not been cleaned but it is most likely, as typical, just a cull. A very nice example with olive green patina. 28mm, 16.1 gms
